every time i change a tag a few MB of space on my hard drive are taken up. the mp3 files that i'm changing the tags of are not increasing in size and i can't figure out where this space is going.

well, i just figured out that it was because of a previous installation of Norton System Works that was duplicating (i assume) the files for the Norton Protected Files. i just purged them and the space reappeared.
