Hello and good day, perhaps someone could help me understand something with iTunes? I use MP3Tag exclusively for tagging and cover images. I also use a third party application to manage my iTunes library. I have all of my images in all the views with the exception of the artist view, here I am missing a third of the images represented by a small circle thumbnail. Can anyone tell me how these images are displayed? You would think it would be displayed like all the others but do I have to create a smaller thumbnail image for all these albums? All my cover art is 300x300 or 200x200. I know this is a bt off target but the apple boards are impossible to find anything on. Also I have embedded image as in some cases the folder.jpg in the album folder.

Cheers!

Several Questions.

1- Which program do you use to manage your library ?
2- Does the \iTunes\Album Artwork\Cache\xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx\ directory get updated when you add or change Album Art? This is the place where iTunes stores it's Album Art which you have added to the Music Files (itc2 files)
3- Does the embedded Cover Art in Mp3tag show as Front Cover ?
4- For Mp3's which tag version do you tag them with ? Id3v1, Id3V2.3 etc etc

I also tag my Music Files exclusively with Mp3tag and also embed the Album Art with it (size preferably > 1000x1000) but I let iTunes manage my Music Library, and then it's synced to 2 iPhones and 1 iPod and no problem showing the artwork in either iTunes itself or the iPhones or iPod.

Edit: iTunes doesn't do anything with the Folder.jpg in the folder it will only disturb the way iTunes handles folders and you could end up with lots of directories with no Music in it (changed for example Artist name) but only have a Folder.jpg.

folder.jpg is just a crutch for the WMP.

Perhaps this thread gets you some more insight: https://forums.mp3tag.de/index.php?showtopic=21619

Thanks my friend, I will try my best and before I begin I wanted to post something that may be helpful on a reddit board. https://www.reddit.com/r/applehelp/comments...in_artist_view/

1. Supersync (it updates the itunes xml in place of the itunes)
2. I think the issue may be that apple is now populating artist image from its own DB rather than the embedded images and my missing image may be due to those artists/album combinations not being in their db but this is a hunch. The Cache in fact is not updating but why would it use the cache for only the artist image when the image is present in all of the other areas.
3. The embedded art does appear as Front Cover yes.
4. Tagging is V2

In terms of the extra folders comment this is why I don't let iTunes manage my library.

It could be that your problem is because that "SuperSync" program doesn't update the Album Art but only the Song Database, but that is just guessing as I don't use a 3rd Party program to manage my Library (only the tags wink.gif laugh.gif )

Please read on:

These 2 files (*.itl and *.xml) in your iTunes Music directory are the Song / Movie etc Database files, and only contain info about "Artist, Song, when was the song last played, location, etc etc etc" BUT ALBUM ARTWORK is NOT Stored in these database Files !!

Example out of the Itunes Library.xml

CODE
<key>xxxxx</key>

            <key>Track ID</key><integer>xxxxx</integer>
            <key>Size</key><integer>2435612</integer>
            <key>Total Time</key><integer>xxxxxx</integer>
            <key>Disc Number</key><integer>1</integer>
            <key>Disc Count</key><integer>2</integer>
            <key>Track Number</key><integer>3</integer>
            <key>Track Count</key><integer>10</integer>
            <key>Year</key><integer>1973</integer>

            <key>Album Rating</key><integer>60</integer>
            <key>Album Rating Computed</key><true/>
            <key>Artwork Count</key><integer>1</integer>
            <key>Persistent ID</key><string>xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx</string>
            <key>Track Type</key><string>File</string>
            <key>File Folder Count</key><integer>5</integer>
            <key>Library Folder Count</key><integer>1</integer>
            <key>Name</key><string>xxxxx</string>
            <key>Artist</key><string>xxxx</string>
            <key>Album Artist</key><string>xxxx</string>
            <key>Composer</key><string>xxxxxxx</string>
            <key>Album</key><string>xxxxx</string>
            <key>Genre</key><string>xxxx/string>
            <key>Kind</key><string>AAC audio file</string>
            <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/X:/iTunes/iTunes%20Media/Music/XXXXXX/XXXX/XXXXXXXXXXXX.m4a</string>
        </dict>

The Location where iTunes reads it's ALBUM ARTWORK from is the Directory iTunes\Album Artwork\

Only My iTunes Cache directory is (at the moment) 2.95 Gb because there all the covers are located (have a look and you will find a lot of itc2 files in there). IMHO a waste of space, but that's iTunes for you as the Covers are also located in the Music Files themselves but that is the way iTunes handles stuff. Also a good thing to do it this way because NOW every time you plav a song it doesn't have to export the Cover Art and display it, it NOW just reads it out of it's cache

Have a read here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2664492?tstart=0

edit; My workflow is the following

- When I buy a New M4a from iTunes Store, I copy that file to an external Drive (Backup)
- Start editing the Tags with Mp3tag (and maybe import new Cover Art) (in the original Location)
- When done, go to iTunes press Get Info and let iTunes update it's Song Database and I also make sure that the Artwork has changed (make sure that (if you have changed for example Artist name or Album name) that after going to iTunes and press GET INFO that you have removed the cover art from that Directory. (Why see above where I wrote about Empty Dirs with only Cover Art)

- When I rip a Music CD
- Start editing the Tags with Mp3tag and import Cover Art
- When done, right Click on the Song, and select Open the Song with iTunes so it's added to the iTunes Database.
- Again I press Get Info and check if everything I entered it correct and also again check if the Artwork is correct and also if it's location is Correct

x:\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\Artist Name\Album Name\1-01 Song Name.m4a

Very good information.
I am really trying not to use Get Info everytime I import new music, its very manual and I am quite an audio file not to mention there are some well known bugs that persist even in the latest version of itunes where you have to make some random change in get info and then change it back just to get the album correctly associated with the other half of its tracks. I have been more than happy with Supersync and actually the image issue didn't happen in the last version of itunes so I feel like apple made some sort of change.

Many thanks and I hope others are getting valuable info from this discussion as well.

Cheers!

If you want to update lots of songs (eq update iTunes Library with the tag info) in iTunes there are easy ways.

For example: http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/UpdateTagInfo.vbs

Forces iTunes to compare each file's tag with iTunes own record and updates iTunes if necessary. Use to update iTunes after modifying tags with 3rd party tools.
N.b. Previously this has been easy to achieve in iTunes by selecting tracks, using Get Info., and then clicking OK. As of iTunes build 9.2.0.25 this method appears not to update properly hence this script.

These are scripts (Vbscript) especially for iTunes.

I will check out the scripts, I was looking for alternatives to Doug's Apple Scripts (only because I don't use an apple machine for my iTunes library). The best would be scripts that allow you to comment and uncomment sections if you want to want to perform certain actions.

In terms of reference si have made, here are a couple

Thanks !

I have never ever ran into this problem, but maybe that is because I edit all my songs tag info with Mp3tag biggrin.gif

This is my workflow when I add a New Song to an already existing album

- Place the new song in the correct Album directory
(eg: \iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\Artist\Album\)
- load only the new song in Mp3tag (right click - Mp3tag)
- Edit all the necessary tag info
- Close Mp3tag
- Import the Song in iTunes
- Open the whole Album (all songs) in Mp3tag
- Press Ctrl+A to select All Songs
- Check for any discrepancies, you can easily spot any mistakes in (for example) the Artist or the Album Name when instead of the suspected Artist Name or Album Name it says "KEEP". If it says that there that particular field has multiple Entries.

I know it's a lot of manual labor but if you want to have your library perfect that's the way to do it. wink.gif

Re: Scripts

If you want a specific script ask this guy https://origin-discussions-us.apple.com/people/turingtest2

He is also the author of the scripts I linked to in a previous post.
